Revolution in Belarus

Nachbarschaftshilfe? Belarus und Russland

Neighbourly Help? Belarus and Russia

Relations between Russia and Belarus are shaky. During the election campaign, Aliaksandr Lukashenka stylised neighbouring Russia as a national threat. Now he is calling his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for help. Russia sends journalists to replace the strikers in the state media and secret service agents as advisors. And President Putin promises to build up a police reserve force – if the situation gets out of control. What strategy is the Russian government pursuing in view of the social uprising in the neighbouring country? And what does this mean for the sovereignty of Belarus?
